READING TIPS
- Encourage your child to read every day.
- When reading large print point to words as you read them. This will help children recognize that reading goes from left to right and top to bottom.
- Read your child's favorite book over and over.
- Read stories with rhyming words and repeated lines. Have your child help with those words.
- Discuss new words. Talk about what they mean.
- Ask about the pictures in the story and what might be happening in the story.
- Read from a variety of children's storys. These can be nursery rhymes, fairy tales, song and poem books, and also informational text.
- Make a game of reading lables on boxes and signs along the roadside. Look for words that start with a certain letter of the alphabet.
- Set aside 20 minutes a day for reading. Read to, read with, or listen to your child read.
- Take your child to the library and check out books together.
